When Route 66 was certified, Kansas was the first state which could say that the entire route was paved through the state, all 13 miles of it. Cutting across the southeastern corner of the state, Route 66 passes through zinc mining country. The roads are lined with piles of mining debris, or 'chat.' Though Kansas is home to only 13 miles of the route, a great deal of history is contained within it's borders; from bitter mining riots, to banks robbed by Jesse James, to the Baxter Springs Whiz Kids, the baseball team where Mickey Mantle spent his pre-Yankee years.
